Caffeine Time

Winter 2019
This was the first graphical game I ever made, as well as my first solo project where I created the art and sound as well as programmed the game. My goal was to make a very cute and fulfilling experience while warning players about the affects of caffeine addiction. The assignment was the final project for my Foundations of Game Design class and required us to use Construct 3.

Sound Design

I really enjoyed the sound design part of this project. This was the first time I made sound for a game in an official capacity. I used LMMS as the DAW for one sound effect and the music. The other sound effect I got from Robinhood76 on freesound.org. The inspiration for the music was 90s Hip Hop and PaRappa the Rapper.

Programming

While programming in Construct 3 was frustrating at times, it enabled me to complete the whole project myself quickly. As the class was a general education Foundations class, it was meant to be accessible.

The most interesting part for me was programming the "caffeine time" state. It required a boolean and some specific attribute changes on a timer.

Ideation & Prototyping

The idea for Caffeine Time came from a brainstorming session with a coworker. He came into the room and said "It's CAFFEINE TIME!!" I thought it would be hilarious to make a game about a little mug that makes coffee orders and gets addicted to caffeine.

The completed project is far from my full idea for this game. I intended to have multiple recipes for Mugzy to complete and a player score mechanic.

Art

I used Adobe Illustrator to create the background and two-toned character assets for this game. I really enjoy creating cute art, and I love how the sugar cubes turned out. The animations were implemented inside of Construct 3.
