Magic Trick

This game was one of the senior capstone games from UC Santa Cruz’s class of 2020, and has since shipped on Steam and itch.io. It’s an open world skating game with cool tricks, magical stunts, and cute animal characters. Our aim was to make a positive, feel-good experience for the player. We want the player to feel comfortable and radical, while completing fun quests that introduce the townsfolk. My primary role on the project was leading the sound design team. I also did some prototyping and general game design during the initial development stages.

My Contributions

Sound Design

Using Audiokinetic Wwise I implemented sounds and music created by me and our lead sound engineer. Wwise offered the functionality to be able to get the sounds to play at the exact right times and with optimization to ensure that the sound and music didn’t cause any performance issues.

The first thing I did, after taking the Wwise certification courses, was to create a list of objects in Wwise for all of the sound effects and music tracks. After this I just needed to place the lists in soundbanks.

Next was to get the sounds to trigger at the right times in Unity. This was the bulk of the work I did on this project. There are many scripts and animation events that trigger either one-shot sounds, or turn on or off looping sound effects. I even used our state machine to implement some looping sounds. I also did less apparent things like volume sliders and made sure the sounds were mixed well together at the right volumes.

I also wrote these music tracks used for the different islands in the game.

Ideation & Prototyping

I was part of the initial ideation and prototyping development cycle for this game. My biggest contribution in the beginning was the idea of making the character that teaches you how to skate in the beginning a hawk named “Tony the Hawk”.

I made sure that we didn’t deviate too far from the initial goal in the first few weeks of development. Our game is first and foremost a skateboarding game, and I consistently reminded the team of this design pillar.
